Graduated driving: Building skills, confidence, and safety for life
At The Driving Therapist, we believe that learning to drive doesn’t end when you pass your test. Our graduated driving programme ensures new drivers acquire the essential skills, experience, and confidence to stay safe on the road, for life.

Why graduated driving matters
Many people think driving is just about passing a test and that you learn to drive properly afterwards. Unfortunately, time or geographic constraints can limit what pre-test lessons can cover. A lack of effective exposure often leaves drivers anxious, even after passing.

Skills and experiences often missed during standard lessons include:

-
Night driving and adverse weather conditions (rain, snow, ice, fog, bright sunshine)
-
Driving with passengers, especially children
-
Handling in-car gadgets and distractions
-
Smart motorways, multi-lane roundabouts, and unusual road systems
-
Dual carriageways, faster A-roads, overtaking, and planning ahead
-
Tunnels, underpasses, and bridges
-
Emergency scenarios, breakdowns, and encountering blue lights
-
Countryside driving and interacting with high-sided vehicles or toll roads
In other countries, this experience is a legal requirement for new drivers. In the UK, the voluntary Pass Plus scheme exists, but uptake has historically been low. Our graduated driving programme provides a structured, pre-test alternative that ensures learners gain this essential experience early.

Prevention is better than cure. My experience with driving anxiety has led me to develop a comprehensive graduated driver programme, giving you skilful, confident driving while keeping anxiety under control.

Advantages of graduated driving pre-test
Completing this training before your test offers numerous benefits:

-
Reduces anxiety and prevents it from escalating
-
Adds “out-of-the-box” experience for better decision-making
-
Builds confidence driving on motorways and dual carriageways
-
Enhances overall skill and road awareness
-
Prepares you to handle stressful situations calmly
-
Supports mental preparation for your test
-
Reduces the need for further training after passing
-
Ensures you are road-ready on test day
-
Helps lower the risk of post-test collisions
Our three core concepts: The three ‘A’s
To ensure your training is thorough, comprehensive, and fully supportive, our approach is built around three simple principles:

A calm, clear mind is key
Overcoming anxiety is gradual. Many learners begin sessions feeling nervous or pessimistic. We take the time to talk through your feelings and “clear the clutter,” allowing you to focus and concentrate more during lessons.

Allow plenty of time
Two-hour sessions allow learners to progress at a comfortable pace. Rushing through complex scenarios in a single hour often reinforces anxiety. Our approach encourages a relaxed, steady learning rhythm.

A well-planned journey
Our graduated syllabus guides you step-by-step through essential skills and scenarios. Understanding both the “how” and “why” behind each skill boosts confidence and prepares you for the next challenge.
Post-test options
The graduated portion of your training can be completed after passing your test as a Pass Plus course. For full licence holders, we tailor additional sessions to target specific needs, helping overcome lingering driving anxiety and reinforce confidence.
Certification
The Driving Therapist provides a certificate confirming completion of our graduated programme. While DVSA Pass Plus certificates offer limited insurance savings, our certification recognises your skill, progress, and confidence—a milestone to be proud of.
